Design & Technology

At Coleshill we believe Design & Technology is a vital part of preparing children for an ever-changing world.

From Nursery through to Year 6, our DT curriculum is designed to inspire creativity, problem-solving, and resilience. We aim to equip every child with the skills to design, make, and evaluate products that solve real-life problems, using a range of materials and technologies.

Vibrant

Design and Technology is vibrant in our school because it brings learning to life through creative, hands on experiences that excite and inspire our pupils. Children explore real-world problems, experiment with a wide range of materials, and design purposeful products that they can proudly share and evaluate. From imaginative modelmaking to practical construction and food projects, DT encourages curiosity, teamwork, and resilience. Our classrooms buzz with innovation as pupils develop the skills and confidence to become independent thinkers and problem solvers using experiences that excite and inspire our pupils. Rooted

Design and Technology is deeply rooted in our school through a strong, skills-based curriculum that builds progressively from early years upwards. Children develop a secure understanding of the design process—researching, planning, making, and evaluating—so they gain confidence and purpose in their work. Each project connects to real-life contexts, ensuring learning is meaningful and relevant. DT is woven into wider curriculum themes, linking naturally with subjects such as science, maths, art, and computing, helping pupils see how design and innovation shape the world around them. This firm foundation ensures that every child develops essential practical skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities from the very start of their learning journey.

Connected

Design and Technology is connected throughout our school by linking learning to real-life contexts, other curriculum subjects, and the world beyond the classroom. Children make meaningful connections between DT and areas such as science, maths, art, and computing, helping them understand how ideas move from imagination to practical application. Projects are designed to reflect real problems and everyday experiences, allowing pupils to see the purpose behind their work and how it relates to the wider world. Through collaboration, discussion, and shared exploration, DT strengthens pupils’ ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and apply their learning in a connected and purposeful way.

Inclusive

Design and Technology is inclusive in our school because every child is supported to access, enjoy, and succeed in practical learning. We provide a wide range of tools, materials, and teaching approaches to meet the diverse needs of all learners, ensuring that tasks can be adapted and scaffolded so every pupil can participate with confidence. DT encourages collaboration, valuing each child’s ideas and strengths, and offering opportunities for pupils to take on different roles within a project. Through carefully planned lessons, accessible resources, and an emphasis on creativity over perfection, we make sure every child feels empowered to explore, design, and innovate—ensuring that DT truly belongs to everyone.

Inclusion in Design & Technology

Enrichment opportunities

Our Design and Technology enrichment opportunities are enhanced through the involvement of parents, who are invited into school at selected times to take part in practical workshops with pupils. These sessions give children the chance to learn new skills, explore different materials, and experience shared creativity in a supportive environment.
