Art & Design

Vibrant

At Coleshill Church of England Primary School, Art and Design is an important part of our curriculum. Through rich, hands-on creative experiences, we nurture curiosity, imagination and joy, enabling every child to flourish and express their individuality. Through exploring a wide range of materials and techniques, pupils develop creativity as skills and knowledge build over time. By promoting independent thinking, creative risk-taking and the evaluation of their own and others’ work, Art develops confidence, reflection and strong critical thinking skills.

Rooted

Art and Design is rooted in our Christian vision, valuing creativity as a gift and ensuring every child feels known, valued and able to flourish. Through reflection, creative expression and collaboration, Art nurtures character, wellbeing, and spiritual and moral development, promoting compassion, respect and dignity for all. By encouraging pupils to notice beauty, value the natural world and reflect on their place within it, Art also develops a strong sense of stewardship and responsibility for caring for God’s creation.

Connected

Art and Design learning is carefully sequenced and coherently linked across subjects and themes, enabling children to build knowledge and skills progressively over time. Expression through Art is a vehicle for communication of knowledge and ideas, and children take the opportunity to share wider curriculum learning through creative expression. For example on our ‘Where’s Colly’ Geography day, year 5 made models of landmarks across the globe.

Meaningful connections to real-life, community and cultural contexts help pupils see the relevance of their learning and apply creativity beyond the classroom. Through shared projects, collaboration and opportunities to contribute to the wider community, Art fosters a strong sense of belonging and responsibility at a local and global level, enabling pupils to apply what they have learned confidently.

Our local MP Rachel Taylor met with the children commended in her annual design a Christmas card competition.

Inclusive

Art and Design ensures every child feels welcomed, valued and able to succeed by actively identifying and removing barriers to learning. Teaching is thoughtfully adapted to meet diverse needs and celebrate the uniqueness of every child, enabling all pupils to participate fully, flourish, and let their talents shine. Through the study of diverse artists across cultures, alongside inclusive practice and shared creativity, Art promotes equity, respect for difference and active compassion, empowering children to contribute positively to society.

Our Art and Design curriculum balances strong representation of British artists with a carefully chosen range of artists and traditions from across the world. This ensures pupils develop an understanding of both their own cultural heritage and the diverse artistic practices that exist globally, while building skills progressively across all year groups.

Enrichment Opportunities

Coleshill Creatives is a group of enthusiastic pupils with a passion for Art and Design Technology. Throughout the year, members work collaboratively on creative projects that support the wider school community.

In Autumn 1, the children worked incredibly hard to help celebrate Coleshill Church of England Primary School’s 30th birthday, producing thoughtful and creative contributions which included birthday party invitations.

During Autumn 2, they designed and made Christmas cards for our community neighbours, spreading festive cheer and kindness.

In Spring 1, Coleshill Creatives will be creating eye‑catching posters to be displayed around school, working alongside our Digital Leaders to promote Safer Internet Day and encourage the responsible use of AI.
