Science
Investigation and enquiry are at the heart of science and our curriculum. Our units give children the opportunity to be practical and discover for themselves the wonders of the world of science.
We use the ARK Curriculum+ Scheme of work, which is based on the National Curriculum, to guide progression in knowledge and skills over time so that when our children leave us in Year 6, they are ready for the next step in their education at secondary school.

Vibrant
Science at Coleshill CE Primary School is vibrant because it ignites curiosity, wonder and joy through rich, hands-on experiences that bring learning to life. From exploratory play in EYFS to practical investigations, CREST awards and outdoor learning at the farm and in Forest School, pupils encounter science as an exciting, creative subject that encourages them to notice, question and explore the world around them. Visits from experts, trips to places such as the Science Museum and Planetarium, and strong links with the local farm further enrich the curriculum and inspire children to think and behave like real scientists.
Rooted
Science is rooted in our Christian vision and values, ensuring every child feels safe, known and valued as a young scientist. Our curriculum is grounded in an ambitious and coherent progression of substantive knowledge—biology, chemistry and physics—and disciplinary knowledge through explicit teaching of Sc1 skills. Built on ARKCurriculum+ and international evidence of best practice, learning is sequenced carefully from Nursery to Year 6 so pupils build secure understanding over time and develop the wisdom to use science responsibly in God’s world.
Connected
We are proud of our strong links with Southfields Farm and LEAF, which are meaningfully embedded within our Science curriculum and enrich our children’s experience. Rooted in our Christian vision and our belief that the world is God’s gift, these partnerships help children make real-life connections between science, food, farming and sustainability. Through hands-on, purposeful learning, pupils develop a sense of stewardship and responsibility for caring for creation. They are inspired to become informed, conscious consumers who feel empowered to make thoughtful choices that reflect respect for themselves, others and the world around them. Children in all year groups have an annual visit to Southfields Farm and LEAF come into school to support in lessons where appropriate.
Please see our Farm Visits Curriculum Map for more information about how our trips are sequenced across the curriculum.
LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) is a national charity that connects sustainable farming, food education and environmental awareness. LEAF promotes responsible farming, supports sustainable food systems and helps young people understand where their food comes from and how it is produced. Their work brings farming and food production into real-world learning contexts, both on farms and in schools. LEAF supports teachers with resources and training, and connects schools with farmers to provide engaging educational opportunities. Our visits to Southfields Farm are so much more than seeing the animals and having a tractor ride although our children often report that this is what they enjoy! See the download below for our Southfields Farm Visits curriculum sequence for a more detailed overview of the impact on our curriculum provision.
We are very proud to have achieved the Bronze Level Award for LEAF in March 2026. We have already been working towards our Silver Award and look forward to completing this in the near future.

Inclusive
Our science curriculum is proudly inclusive, ensuring all learners—including disadvantaged pupils—have equal access to high-quality science teaching and the opportunity to achieve success. Adaptive teaching, accessible knowledge organisers, varied recording methods, high-quality visuals and practical tasks support all pupils in developing secure understanding. Ongoing formative assessment through ITF quizzes, questioning, oracy, observations and book looks helps teachers identify next steps, remove barriers and maintain high expectations. Every child is supported and challenged to achieve their best, building confidence, resilience and independence in scientific thinking.
Inclusion in Science

Diversity
Science at Coleshill CE Primary School embraces and represents diversity, celebrating difference both within our community and across the scientific world. Pupils learn about a wide range of scientists from various cultures, backgrounds and time periods—such as Mary Anning, David Attenborough, Jane Goodall, Carl Linnaeus, Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace—highlighting the global and evolving nature of scientific discovery. Our curriculum fosters respect, belonging and inclusion, ensuring every child sees themselves reflected in scientific learning and understands the power of diverse ideas in shaping our world.
Enrichment Opportunities
At Coleshill C of E Primary, our Eco‑Council plays a vital role in shaping our identity as “The Green School.” Made up of passionate pupil representatives from across the school, the Eco‑Council leads projects that help us care for God’s world, protect our environment, and make sustainable choices every day. Working alongside staff, governors and our wider community, they champion initiatives linked to the national Let’s Go Zero campaign to help us reduce our carbon footprint and build a greener future.
Our Eco‑Council members take the lead on practical, high‑impact actions such as improving recycling, reducing waste, promoting energy‑saving behaviours, and enhancing our natural environment through outdoor learning and Forest School experiences. They help shape school decisions, run awareness campaigns and model responsible stewardship for all pupils. Through their work, sustainability becomes more than a project — it becomes part of who we are as a school community.
Together, we are committed to nurturing environmentally conscious, active citizens who recognise their power to make a difference — locally, nationally and globally.
