History
At Coleshill C of E Primary School, our History curriculum brings the past to life through meaningful, joyful and challenging learning experiences. Grounded in our Christian vision and values, it ensures every child is known, valued and supported to achieve their very best.
Vibrant
History at Coleshill is designed to spark curiosity, excitement and a genuine love of learning. Our lessons are brought to life through rich, immersive experiences, including visits, visitors and hands-on exploration of historical sources, as well as creative approaches such as drama, role play, art and storytelling that help pupils step into the past and build lasting memories. This vibrant approach ensures children find joy in learning while developing deep historical understanding.
Rooted
Our History curriculum is rooted in our Christian vision, fostering dignity, compassion and a reflective understanding of the past. It is underpinned by strong routines, clear expectations and well‑sequenced planning, ensuring all children feel secure, supported and ready to learn. It also draws upon local history, helping pupils understand the heritage of Coleshill and how their community fits into wider historical narratives. By being deeply rooted in values, place and the stories of the past, our curriculum ensures every child feels grounded and confident in their learning.
Connected
History at Coleshill is intentionally connected across year groups, with carefully sequenced units and “High 5s” that build knowledge step by step; across time, enabling pupils to make sense of how past events shape the world they know today; and across experiences, using retrieval practice, modelling and real‑world contexts to strengthen long‑term understanding. These strong connections make learning coherent, meaningful and memorable
Inclusion
Our history curriculum ensures every child can succeed through fully accessible planning tailored to meet the needs of all pupils, including those with SEND or additional vulnerabilities; careful scaffolding and explicit vocabulary support that help children build confidence and secure key knowledge; and adaptive teaching informed by ongoing assessment and responsive feedback. Through this inclusive approach, every child is supported to develop curiosity, confidence and a secure understanding of the past.

Enrichment
Educational visits such as Warwick Castle, Aston Hall and Cadbury World bring history, heritage and industry to life, strengthening and deepening classroom learning. Pupil voice tells us these experiences make learning “more memorable” because children can see, explore and experience what they have studied. Through enrichment, we build cultural capital, curiosity and a lasting love of learning.
