ELSA
At Coleshill, we know that children learn best when they feel safe, understood and emotionally secure. Alongside our whole‑school commitment to wellbeing, we offer ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) sessions as part of our targeted support for pupils who may need a little extra help with their emotions, confidence or friendships. ELSA sits within our wider Graduated Approach for Mental Health & Wellbeing.
What is ELSA?
ELSA is a specialist, school‑based intervention designed to help children learn about and understand their own emotions. Delivered by a trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistant, sessions offer pupils a safe, calm space to talk, explore feelings and build practical skills for managing everyday challenges.
At Coleshill, ELSA focuses on:
- understanding and expressing emotions
- building self‑esteem and confidence
- managing worries and anxieties
- developing social and friendship skills
- problem‑solving and resilience
- improving emotional regulation
These sessions help pupils feel more ready to learn, more secure in themselves and more confident socially.
How Do ELSA Sessions Work?
- Sessions are usually weekly, lasting around 30–45 minutes for roughly 6 weeks.
- They take place in a quiet, safe, supportive space in school.
- Activities are warm, practical and child‑centred—such as stories, role‑play, drawing, games, problem‑solving, conversation and relaxation strategies.
- Each programme is designed around the individual needs of the child.
- Regular reviews ensure sessions stay focused and effective.
ELSA is not long-term therapy, but it provides early, targeted support to help children develop emotional tools and strategies they can use every day.
When Might ELSA Support Be Helpful?
Children may benefit from ELSA support if they are experiencing any of the following:
- worries or anxiety
- difficulty managing emotions
- friendship difficulties
- low confidence or self‑esteem
- challenges with social skills
- changes in family circumstances
- struggling with separation, loss or big feelings
These needs may show up through behaviour, reduced confidence, difficulties in class or worries expressed at home.
How ELSA Fits into Our School Vision
ELSA reflects our commitment to being a Vibrant, Rooted, Connected and Inclusive school:

- Rooted: Support is grounded in our Christian values of love, dignity, hope and belonging.
