Writing

At Coleshill C of E Primary School, our literacy writing curriculum enables every child to grow as a confident reader, articulate speaker and purposeful writer, rooted in our Christian vision that, with God’s love, we grow and flourish.

Vibrant

Literacy writing at Coleshill is vibrant, engaging and inspiring. Our curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, joy and a lifelong love of reading and writing. Pupils are immersed in a rich range of carefully chosen texts and genres, with daily class stories, regular Reading for Pleasure sessions and opportunities for discussion through book talk. Teachers select motivating and meaningful stimuli that reflect pupils’ interests, ensuring learning is creative and purposeful. Whole-school celebrations such as World Book Day, National Storytelling Week and reading buddy opportunities promote enthusiasm and pride in reading, helping children to develop positive attitudes and confidence as readers and writers.

Rooted

At Coleshill C of E Primary School, our literacy curriculum is rooted in our Christian vision that every child matters to God and is treated with dignity and respect. Guided by our motto, “With God’s love we grow and flourish,” we use high-quality texts to nurture character, reflection and spiritual development. Through reading, pupils encounter diverse characters, experiences and viewpoints, developing empathy and understanding of others. We encourage children to see books as windows, mirrors and doors — enabling them to see themselves, explore the lives of others and grow in compassion, kindness and forgiveness. Writing provides opportunities for pupils to express their thoughts, values and beliefs, supporting their development as reflective, respectful members of our community.

Connected

Our literacy curriculum is connected across all areas of learning and to the wider world. Pupils apply their reading and writing skills in meaningful contexts across subjects such as science, history and RE, producing high-quality written outcomes that reflect their knowledge and understanding. Exposure to a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts broadens pupils’ vocabulary and helps close the word gap, enabling them to articulate opinions and engage in thoughtful discussion. Through research, cross-curricular writing and purposeful communication, pupils recognise that literacy is essential for learning, for life and for their future role within God’s world.

Inclusive

At Coleshill, our literacy curriculum is inclusive and built on the belief that every child is valued and capable of success. We remove barriers to learning through high-quality teaching, thoughtful adaptations and targeted support, including the use of InPrint, pre-teaching of vocabulary and carefully structured learning sequences that lead to independent writing. Early reading is prioritised through Sound Start phonics and a keep up, not catch up approach, with vulnerable readers receiving additional opportunities to read regularly with adults. A mastery approach ensures that all pupils access rich, shared texts and experiences, fostering confidence, perseverance and a strong sense of belonging so that every child can flourish.
